A Banner Day at Bolton Street Synagogue:
The Installation of Rabbi Andrew Gordon
November 17, 2017 at 7:30pm
Baltimore – Bolton Street Synagogue in Roland Park announces the formal installation on Friday, November 17, 2017, of its new rabbi, Rabbi Andrew Gordon, as spiritual leader of our Baltimore City-based Reform Jewish congregation.
Bolton Street Synagogue congregants and friends have already found a place in their hearts and minds for this kind and generous man. Rabbi Gordon’s term at Bolton Street began in July 2017 following a far-reaching congregational search for a visionary teacher with gifts of insight, leadership, openness, and enthusiasm.
A rabbi’s installation is a tradition of pomp and ceremony said to have originated with Solomon’s use of chariots and horsemen to emphasize his rightful succession to the throne of his father King David. The Bolton Street Synagogue installation will also be impressive. We are honored to have Rabbi Michael White of Temple Sinai in Roslyn, New York—a leader in the Reform Jewish movement and teacher, guide, and mentor of Rabbi Gordon—as speaker and local clergy and community leaders as guests. “It is almost a wedding ceremony,” says Rabbi Gordon. “It makes the rabbi and congregation official.”
The officiates will be Rabbi White and Bolton Street Synagogue president Melissa Zieve.
Rabbi Gordon grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan before entering Hebrew Union College in New York. From the bima (pulpit) he emphasizes openness, community, fairness, diversity, and opposition to bigotry, racism, and hatred of all kind.
“Bolton Street is a community known for its openness. It doesn’t matter one’s age, sexuality, skin color, background, how they define family, or even religion.” says Rabbi Gordon. “All are welcome to enter the doors.”
